Basically, the Tuskegee Research Project was a study held in Alabama which lasted for 40 years. This project was developed to see how syphilis effects the African American body and how it progresses. Consisting of nearly 400 African Americans who were told they were receiving treatment for their illness which was referred to as "bad blood." In fact, they were receiving a placebo and were used as human guinea pigs.
They experiment was ended in 1972 however it took the United States government 25 years to apologize for the horrific events that took place in Tuskegee. President Bill Clinton gave an apology speech which involved the eight survivors of the experiment being there. As always president Clinton was well spoken. He not only said he was sorry but he also developed a plan to try and make up for what the country had done the best he could. He came up with a five point plan which included not only making Tuskegee into a museum but also devoted laws in which would prohibit any other racial type experiment to take place.
Today the United States of America enogerated a black man as a president. This is a huge step for the African American people as well as all of those living in the United States. It shows that we have grown away from such racism and truly are sorry for the events that took place for over 40 years.
